It’s okay to not be okay around food (and a special, free gift for 10 readers)

For years, I felt like my relationship with food and eating was not okay.

Even worse, I felt totally alone in my struggle.

No one else seemed to be obsessing like I was. Other women just seemed to make reasonable choices and maintain healthy weights.

Sure, people gained or lost weight sometimes, and occasionally I heard people talking about diets, but I never heard anyone talking about binging, obsessing about their eating or weighing themselves multiple times a day.

So I figured that the problem was just that I needed to lose weight. Once I get some willpower and lose 20 pounds, I reasoned, it will all be okay.

It took me a long time to realize that the problem was so much bigger than that. The real problem was:

I never knew that I didn’t need to micromanage or obsess about my eating.

I never knew that if I could tap into my body’s ability to eat when I was hungry, stop when I was full, and choose foods that appeal to me, my weight would take care of itself.

I never knew how to deal with binging and eating with family and friends and colleagues in a way that nourished me rather than left me overly full and frustrated.

Even more tragically, I never knew that my crazy eating was a sign that other elements of my life needed attention and love. That my binging could open the door to living the life I was meant to live.

I’ve been talking to a lot of blog readers lately, and it is so clear to me that so many of us are struggling. I know that the holidays are past, but I’ve been wanting to give you a gift.
